No Fail To Do ListJul 20, 2021
Do you struggle with getting the right things done? There’s a difference between being productive and simply being busy. Many people are really good at crossing off a to-do lists, but when it comes to the one thing that matters - results - many people let days, weeks, months, and years go by without making true meaningful progress.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, where you feel like you’re working long and hard hours but failing to gain traction, it might be time to try switching the way you’re planning your day. Instead of relying on a to-do list of all the things that need to get done, you need to start focusing on the needle movers. The things in your life and in your business that will truly move the needle forward in the results you’re getting (or not getting).
The problem with to-do lists is that they just keep getting longer. There is never any end in sight for a to-do list. As you cross one thing off, suddenly you think of two other things that need to get done - and the cycle continues. That’s because to-do lists either lack prioritization on what needs to be done, or they prioritize urgency over importance. This means that the tasks that require most immediate attention get prioritized over the less urgent ones that are likely more important.
So what’s the solution? The No Fail To Do List.
The No Fail To Do List is extremely simple, but extremely effective when implemented correctly. Instead of listing everything you need to do for that day, you’re going to list the ONE to THREE most important things that, if accomplished, will move progress forward most effectively.
You might immediately be thinking, ‘I can certainly get done more than one to three things in a day’ - but here is where it’s important to make sure you’re selecting the right things. To select your items for your No Fail To Do List, you have to have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish this year, this quarter, this month, and this week. Or what we call Goal Setting to The Now. But once you know that, then you can ask yourself questions such as:
- What’s one thing I’ve been putting off lately that I know needs to get done?
- What’s the number one thing that will get me closer to my weekly goals?
- What have I done in the past that produced the results I wanted?
- What is something that only I can do that will help our team/family succeed?
- What distractions or busy work do I need to focus less on to shift more attention to the most important things?
This type of reflective thinking should get you thinking about the more important, but likely less urgent, things that need to get done to drive your success forward in business and in life. You might not always choose the ‘best’ to do list for the day - but this system relies on momentum.
You won’t see your business or other areas of your life transform in a single day or single week of doing this (most likely). However, when you can stack this kind of focused consistency, day after day and week after week for years on end, imagine the type of progress and results you could start to achieve if you were focusing on the most important things.
Instead of getting dozens of things crossed off a to do list with no meaningful progress towards your goals, shift your mindset to one of accomplishing at least ONE THING every single day that moves you closer to the ideal vision you have for your life and business.
Key Takeaway: Focus less on quantity of how much you’re doing when it comes to your productivity and focus more on quality of the impact your to do list is actually having on your results.
